Project/Dfm Engineer
Transferred with SLB to a recent Schlumberger acquisition Peak Well Systems working in the Wireline Segment as a Design for Manufacture Engineer, working on a variety of improvement projects, ranging from facilty upgrades to new machine purchases within CAPEX budgets for both the Perth and Aberdeen (R&D) facility.• DfM support for local sustaining engineering team in Perth and NPD team in Aberdeen.• Review drawings for dimensional accuracy, ease of manufacture and identify cost drivers ahead of time.• Work with Supply Chain team to identify suitable Vendors for parts outside internal capabilities and capacity, visiting their shops and assessing their suitability, followed up with scheduled audits.• Reviewing current machine and tooling capabilities and working within CAPEX budgets to introduce new technologies, managed $1m USD budgets for both Aberdeen and Perth facilities.• Project management on various internal projects to upgrade a dated production facility, working with various contractors to upgrade the compressed air network, new compressor and external waste management system for the sand blasting shop to comply with HSE issues we were previously experiencing.• Lead role on a project to select and install a new Haas VF-5 milling machine to improve our in-house milling capabilities. Overseen the installation process in accordance with local HSE procedures (Lifting plans, HARC, JSA etc..) Also arranged for sale and removal of the old milling machine this replaced.• Co-ordinating the training and installation of Edgecam software to introduce a more robust CAD/CAM system into the Perth facility.• Conducted a feasability study of upgrading the machine shop to introduce DNC linking for the CNC programs, at present working with USB pen drives etc...
Toolroom Manager
• Manage the day to day activities of a modern toolroom consisting of 6 people working on presetting of tooling for CNC machines offline in a controlled environment.• Manage the tooling budget inline with the company objectives whilst maintaining adequate stock to run the shop effectively.• Implemented a tool vending solution to reduce the amount of traffic on the shop and keep the operators in their immediate work areas reducing NVA time.• Liase with external Vendors to introduce and trial new tooling on the market to improve our efficiency, ease of manufacture and increase profits.• Current Project is to implement Zoller software for both our tool management and pre-setting of tools working alongside our CNC programming department to provide a more robust system of measuring, setting and managing our tooling with exact precision. • Manage our purchasing and inventory on stock, upon taking over this position and effectively managing our tooling purchases and vendors used I have saved in excess of £20k over a 3 month period on what would have been a tooling spend in excess of £50k. This was done by reviewing the logisitcs and re-order points configured in a dated system which had not been reviewed to align with vending units purchased nor was there any forward thinking done on projected workload in the shop and tooling up accordingly. Previously stock was purchased on historical data with no review on demand.
Project/Dfm Engineer
• Manage the design of processes using Lean concepts including standardized work instructions, line balancing, layout and work sequence (routing) optimization, training development matrix, Value Stream Mapping, Kaizen/5S workouts, pull processes, cell design and quick changeover/batch-size optimization• Project Lead on several Design for Cost projects using Apriori software and was assigned team mentor role to implement and evaluate the usage of the software for both concept design and costing in our Belfast homeplant.• Manage manufacturing risks on new products to minimize or eliminate them using DfMEA and PfMEA principles.• Direct the engineering team on a wide range of manufacturability concepts and materials during the design phase to define and eliminate manufacturing risks to ensure the manufacturability of new designs including both New Product Development and Rapid Response• Coordinate with Production or Manufacturing Manager for PLMP manufacturing sign off;• Manage support with manufacturing expertise for drawings to help ensure consistency between component requirements and manufacturing capability• Manage the Design for Manufacturability responsibilities while managing the transition of new products to the appropriate integration or production center for ENP and pilot series builds;• Manage manufacturability issues to ensure that established product quality and product yield levels are met at the start of production by Manufacturing (FPY)(RTY)• Direct investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation for product quality and product yield issues during product launch.• Produce Design books and Best practice guidelines for Engineers and Designers to work from in order to maintain stardards across our business functions.• Team Leader role in various Improvement projects as part of the companies Hoshin iniatitives.• Mentor role to junior Engineers and Designers.
