Modelling Time Dependant Natural Ventilation Flows In Buildings

This PhD investigated transient and time dependent natural ventilation flows within offices, hospital wards and auditoriums. This experimental research concentrated on the interactions between location of openings, location of heat sources and room geometry and how near identical spaces can have significantly different internal temperatures and flow regimes. Significant time was also spent analysing the effectiveness of different ventilation strategies on the internal thermal environment and draining times.

Worked each summer during my Civil Engineering degree as part of a ScholarshipWhile studying Civil and Environmental Engineering at Nottingham University, I won a scholarship with the civil engineering company Scott Wilson. From June '07 - September '07, I was involved in several project, including a research project, survey work and railway track designThe research project involved designing a new method of surveying, using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). For the most part, I worked alone managing my own deadlines and assessing my own work. I developed computer programming, fixed several items together within the UAV, including a Nikon camera, GPS and radio transmitters along with using Photogrammetric software to analyse results. I was part of a team surveying land proposed for housing development. It was important to work as a team, whilst ensuring safety at all times. Worked as part of a team which analyzed soil and railway foundation samples from railways in Scotland, determining the level of repair required. I was responsible for looking at the data collected from the field studies, and writing reports for the client, who was National Rail, suggesting likely required repairs for 2010/2011. From June ‘08 - September '08, I was involved in conducting physical analysis of the soil samples from the railway lines. I was responsible for logging the state of the soil and railway foundations. This information was sent to the department which I had worked in the previous summer which compiled the reports, and made recommendations.
