Project: Investigating the use of differential ion mobility spectrometry (DMS) for the use of determining fundamental analyte-solvent interactions. Throughout my time at the University of Waterloo, the project evolved from testing different interactions to now being able to determine different chemical characteristics of compounds from the DMS profiles of the compounds using machine learning techniques (Random Forests). It also covered several different chemical projects using DMS for analysis such as potential drug candidates with a collaboration with Pfizer, to study of alpha acid content within different beers with a collaboration in Innocente Brewing Company. Responsibilities: Develop new techniques for resolving chemical and biological aspects of small molecules from their DMS profiles (Machine Learning, coupling UV spectroscopy, and introduction of chemical modifiers to the carrier gas)Oversaw and teaching of DMS techinques to PhD, masters as well as undergraduate students.Wrote scientific as well as corporate papers for our industrial partners ( SCIEX, and Pfizer)

-Project: To design and build an velocity map imaging (VMI) apparatus capable of studying the reaction dynamics of nitrogen dioxide photodissociation when trapped within an argon matrix. UV dissociation of particles were conducted using laser dissociation, and the reaction dynamics were studied by ionizing the neutral fragments using a resonance enhanced multi-photon ionization scheme (REMPI) with consecutive VMI analysis. -Responsibilities: Design of the instruments ion optics with the use of computational methods such as SIMION. Created the control program for the system including, the laser systems (Nd-YAG, along with an excimer pumped dye laser), the molecular beam valve, and detector system (Multichannel plates, Phosphorus Screen, Camera).- Outcomes: Was able to show that the system is able to study the reaction dynamics following photodissociation of molecules while held within a solid matrix.

Worked in the Chemistry Branch at AECL, designing and implementing a new Chemical Database for the branch.

Worked in the lab of Dr. Andrew Vreugdenhil, studying materials chemistry specifically investing different Sol-Gel preparations.

I worked with the Deep River Science Academy, working under the supervision of Dr. Stan Klimas at Chalk River National Labs, AECL. I had two high school students who I trained to work in a laboratory setting to build a ternary phase diagram relevant to the CANDU reactor.
