Profile bio

About Stephen Wegmann

About a year or so back, I was going down a narrow little passage of ink black swamp in a national park in south Georgia. It was noon, and glassy water on either side of the boat could have hid a potentially limitless number of alligators. Steering the boat carefully around densely packed vegetation, an errant strand of Spanish moss gently grazed the top of my driving cap. In front of my face, an agitated spider dropped down from the tip of my hat. I'm sure we were both equally surprised that someone with a crippling arachnophobia and the inability to swim would decide to go boating around the swamp on a camping weekend...Why. Why would I do this? Well, you learn a thing or two about yourself when you're uncomfortable. Also, I'm just a sucker for a good story, and I knew that me, plus alligators, plus swamp, would be a good story (if I didn't drown or get eaten). Mistakenly, I didn't account for all the spiders.Telling compelling stories is a timeless skill, a skill that can prove a point, change minds, inspire, and motivate one to action. Whether I'm trying to convince a Pre-K class that I'm the dinosaur chasing them, presenting a training on ethics, or dissecting the nuances regarding whether or not a hot dog in a bun counts as a sandwich -- at the end of the day, communication -- an anecdote, a story, an experience -- is crafted by gleaning and presenting insights about our world in interesting and evocative new ways. If I can do this for you or your company, all the while putting smiles on some faces -- I'd be golden, and I'm sure you'd feel the same. Stories come in all shapes and sizes: a presentation to a small group, an article for a website, or a digital storytelling medium -- all of these deserve care and consideration, with the understanding that every opportunity is an opportunity to grip someone and expose them to something new.
