The WMO Guide to Meteorological Instruments and Methods of Observation (WMO No. 8) (GIMO) describes instruments, observation techniques, and best practices. By ensuring that good data measurement techniques and practices are followed, we can be confident that weather forecasts around the world are accurate. The GIMO is used by meteorological services in all 185 WMO member nations. Prior to chairing this WMO team, I chaired the team revising the WMO International Cloud Atlas, Manual on the Observation of Clouds and other Meteors. This introduced the first new cloud classifications since 1975.

The In-Situ Sensing Facility (ISF) serves the advanced observational needs of the atmospheric science research community by providing a flexible, state-of-the-art backbone measurement capability applicable to a wide range of experimental needs. ISF emphasizes advanced sensor capabilities, sensor integration, system mobility, and the ability to deploy to remote or difficult locations. In-Situ measurements are made at the earth's surface, on towers, on balloons, and on packages dropped from aircraft. Remote sensing is used for profiling measurements from the ground up using radar, lidar and acoustic sensors.

NCAR Earth Observing LaboratoryResearch primarily in areas of developing and applying novel instrumentation (remote and in-situ measurements) to process-studies in boundary-layer meteorology. Emphasis on mountain meteorology and measurement techniques.
