Catamaran Guru co-founder, Stephen Cockcroft, has lived out his teenage dream of sailing around the world many times over. His first trip was a 30,000 NM trip from his native South Africa to his new home in the United States aboard a 45-ft sloop he built in his friend's backyard. An accomplished offshore catamaran sailor, Stephen has made multiple trans-ocean trips. His favorite being a voyage up the uncharted waters of the Red Sea. Stephen is also a competitive catamaran racer with several trophies to his name aboard a Lagoon 450, a Bali 5.4 and Catana OC 50. Decades of hands-on experience have provided Stephen with unparalleled expertise in the technical, financial, taxation, contractual, and lifestyle aspects of yachting and yacht ownership. This mastery has made him an invaluable member of the international sailboat and sailing industries where Stephen has served as part owner of the popular Island Spirit Catamaran factory, co-owner of the third-largest charter company in North America/Caribbean, and as a yacht and charter broker working with the Flagship catamaran ranges for Bali, Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot, Nautitech, and Sunreef, as well as developing and customizing a wide range of large catamarans. Stephen represents the interests of Catamaran Guru customers seeking to buy or sell a yacht. A licensed and bonded yacht and ship broker in the State of Florida and operator of his own US-based brokerage house, Stephen has represented catamaran buyers in a wide range of transactions, helping them understand various charter management models, determine which model helps them achieve their goals, and identify ways to offset the cost of yacht ownership including setting up their boats as businesses in order to benefit from business tax deductions, and, most importantly, crafting viable exit strategies.A former sailing Instructor Examiner for the American Sailing Association (ASA), Stephen now owns a prestigious Royal Yachting Association (RYA) sailing school, one of two such schools in the US. He has taught hundreds of people to sail catamarans and monohulls in hands-on, live-aboard courses in many locations. Stephen also co-owns Bali and Catana dealerships for the USA and Caribbean, with offices in Texas, Florida, and Annapolis, Maryland. He shares his passion for sailing with his wife, Catamaran Guru co-founder and fellow ASA instructor, Estelle. The twosome spends most of their time aboard "Mithril", a Catana 50 Ocean Class that they are prepping for the World ARC Rally and adding to the list of 45 countries they’ve visited over their years.
