  • Government Digital Service
    Digital Service Manager /Product Manager
Government Digital Service Feb 2012 - Mar 2017
    London, United Kingdom
I led the product team that delivered a service (GOV.UK Verify) which allows users to use their real-world identity online, so that they can access multiple digital transactions and services without offline interaction. This service replaces many of the face-to-face, postal and telephone based identity and authentication checks. This involved building a secure standards-based user-facing platform that connected multiple government departments to a marketplace of user-facing identity providers, ranging from small startups to well known brands such as Barclays, the Post Office and Experian - and managing the relationships with them.Key achievements/responsibilities in this role:- Leading the product team, from initial discovery phase, through alpha, beta and the delivery and ongoing evolution of a live user-facing platform that met government security and digital standards, to over a million users, using agile and user centered methodologies. The work to build and evolve the service spanned multiple workstreams and created a portfolio of products.- Building, structuring and leading an agile product delivery team of over 50 staff with all the skills needed, from developers to product managers, starting with myself as the first hire, transitioning the team over time from an initial cohort of consultants to in-house expertise.- Rolling out the service to users of multiple government department services, and balancing their needs with those of the users.- Introducing user research skills to the Government Digital Service to which transformed how it was done - by hiring in new skills and experts. We performed continual user research using it to evolve the product and make key product decisions.- Building a team of product managers to lead major service components as the service scaled.
