The Research & Monitoring Unit provides evidence on walking and cycling that is transparent and authoritative, and which influences and shapes policy, practice and behaviour. It is a centre of excellence for walking and cycling monitoring, evaluation and research. I led the team of over 50 specialists based across offices in Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London and Newcastle. Their expertise covers a range of disciplines – evaluation, monitoring and data collection, appraisal, data analysis and modelling, research and GIS.The team's portfolio covers everything from small scale monitoring of regional projects through to evaluation of complex nationwide programmes with international significance. They conduct research of strategic importance to Sustrans – covering diverse themes such as transport poverty, air quality, physical activity, gender inequality, health and safety.My role involved leadership of every aspect of strategic and operational management, research design, business development, quality assurance, team wellbeing and personal development, internal and external relationship management and communications.
