At Osborne Clarke I have continued to work in advertising, marketing and privacy law, working for advertisers, agencies etc wherever the branding and marketing process touches the law. Digital and privacy have been two particular areas of focus.As a volunteer I have worked for some years with the UK Direct Marketing Association, Europe's largest trade body for the marketing industry. Currently I am Deputy Chair of its Governance Committee. I have also served as an elected member of the DMA's Email Marketing Council, where I chaired the Law & Best Practice Hub and was lead legal author of the first edition of the DMA's Email Marketing Best Practice Guidelines. I was also a founder member of the DMA's Social Media Council. For the US-based Promotion Marketing Association, I was the first co-chair of its London chapter, whilst in Europe I was the first UK member of the European Advertising Lawyers' Association.I am also co-author of the current edition of the Advertising and Marketing volume of Butterworth's Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents.I have curated a number of ground-breaking international surveys amongst our network of advertising lawyers across the rest of Europe and beyond on topics such as cookie laws, electronic communications and data protection reform.

As a partner in Lewis Silkin I took a lead role in helping to build its profile in advertising and marketing law, co-founding and a driving force in its Marketing Services Law Group.I was Legal Business magazine's first "Ad lawyers' advertising lawyer." I also chaired the cross-industry team that developed and published the first edition of the UK's first suggested form of contract for the provision of advertising services which had the blessing of agencies, represented by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, brand owners, represented by the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers, and purchasing officers, represented by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply.I also became the first UK member of the then "European Advertising Lawyers' Association" which later became the Global Advertising Lawyers' Alliance.Initially my work was contentious but in response to client demand I handled an increasing volume of commercial and "pre-litigation" work.
