Stephen is Director of the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence at the University of Cambridge, where he leads a team of researchers across four programmes on the nature and impact of AI. His own research is in philosophy of technology, in particular critical perspectives on AI, robotics and life-extension. Stephen earned a PhD in philosophy from Cambridge, then joined the British Foreign Office, where he worked as a policy advisor and diplomat. He subsequently wrote on a wide range of philosophical and scientific subjects, while also looking after his three daughters. His book 'Immortality' was a New Scientist book of the year. His work has been featured on the BBC, NPR, PBS, in the Atlantic, New York Times, Guardian, Telegraph and other media around the world.
