The Rolls-Royce Electrical Systems and Services Graduate Scheme consists of six 3/4 month attachments in different areas of the company to gain a wide variety of experience in different engineering roles:Electrical Power and Control Systems (EPACS):Investigated and compared cooling methodologies for the SILOET WP1.2 HP Starter/Generator, including the use of Opera 2D Finite Element Analysis software to optimise alternative machine designs and their associated thermal models. Used the results of this investigation to provide recommendations for the most appropriate cooling method.Combustor Buckling Test Rig:Designed a test rig to identify the buckling point of an aero-engine combustor, prior to certification, including the completion of stress calculations from first principles for a hydraulic pressure vessel design.Shadowing Chief Technologist - Rolls-Royce, Nuclear, Submarines:Chaired a series of meetings with internal specialists and external independent consultants to obtain input on proposed Electrical Controls and Instrumentation (EC&I) Research & Technology (R&T) tasks within the Nuclear Submarines business. Used the information gained to prioritise EC&I R&T strategy tasks and make recommendations on which tasks to proceed with. Civil Aerospace, Future Programmes:Conducted a trade study, using Systems Engineering tools and principles such as FMEA, to identify hazards caused by Bleed Valve failure on a future engine architecture design. Designed new architectures for bleed valve actuation and completed a trade-off between architectures, recommending those with the potential for further development.Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems:Integrated pressure measurement equipment with a new programmable logic controller (PLC) based control system, including the development of a bespoke software driver to manage TCP/IP communication.
