Senior Software Engineer

Current

Glasgow

Jun 1990 - Present

Software Engineer

Inchinnan

This is a continuation from my previous position.

Jul 2012 - May 2022

Software Engineer

Inchinnan

This is a continuation from my previous position. In April 2008, Graham Technology was acquired by the Sword Group and the name of the company then changed to Sword Ciboodle. The GT-X product was renamed to the "Ciboodle Development Kit" and the contact centre application was renamed to "Core Ciboodle". The combined package was called "Sword Ciboodle".In February 2009, I transferred into the development team.

Apr 2008 - Jul 2012

Commercial Technologist

Inchinnan

This is a continuation from my previous position. The company's main product, GT-X, went from strength to strength. It was written in C++ up to version 6 but was rewritten in Java for version 7.I continued to be heavily involved in GT-X, both programming in it and writing "service objects". Service objects enabled GT-X to communicate with the customers' legacy systems, whatever they happened to be.When the company had enough staff working with GT-X, I joined the Systems Integration team and took on a dual role of servicing both the Systems Integration customers and the GT-X customers. By this time, the company that produced the Sea-change language had produced a language called "New Horizon", which is effectively Sea-change with a graphical interface, and this became the language of choice for the team.In 2006, the company launched a contact centre application written in GT-X.

Jan 1994 - Apr 2008

Software Engineer

Iain Graham Consultants

Hillington

This company was a value added reseller owned by Iain and Sheena Graham. It produced bespoke software for small to medium enterprises. When I joined there were only about 20 employees in a single office. This software company was unusual because it also had some hardware engineers and promoted Unix as the platform of choice. The main language used was Sea-change, which is a fourth generation language. In 1992, the company started producing a product called GT-X. This became the company's main product and I was very much involved in it.Even though the company's main focus had become GT-X, Iain Graham wanted to retain his existing customer base, so the Systems Integration team was formed to look after their existing and future needs. The company later became Graham Technology.

Jun 1990 - Jan 1994

Senior System Programmer

John Menzies Retail Division

I worked on various programs, mainly written in Sculptor (4GL), but also some C, Unix Shell Script and AWK. I also provided technical support and performed system maintenance.

May 1987 - May 1990

Research Associate

I worked on various communications related projects. I also did some teaching and Unix system administration work.

Jan 1986 - Apr 1987

Research Associate

I worked on a Motorola sponsored programme of research into chips for local area networks.

Jan 1985 - Dec 1985

Research Fellow

My supervisor at the Computer Science department of the University of Strathclyde wanted to move to Lancaster University along with a number of his colleagues. I agreed to join him so that I could continue my research.

Jan 1984 - Dec 1984

Research Fellow

Local area networks were in their infancy at this time and there were two competing technologies: Ethernet and Cambridge Ring. I was tasked with research to compare these technologies. As part of this work, I designed and built an ethernet card. The Cambridge Ring hardware was supplied by a third party.

Sep 1983 - Dec 1983

Programmer

This was a summer job to help create PNX, which is a Unix variant for the ICL PERQ. My role was to port a large number of C programs.

Jun 1982 - Aug 1982

Systems Programmer

This was a summer job at Motorola's semiconductor manufacturing plant in East Kilbride, Scotland.Anyone entering the manufacturing area had to wear special suits and be thoroughly cleaned because the smallest particle of dirt could damage the chips. A system was required so that data could be transferred between the manufacturing area and the office without all the hassle of donning special suits and being cleaned.I therefore wrote software to transfer data over an ethernet connection using Motorola 6800 assembly code.

Jun 1981 - Aug 1981

Temporary Assistant

University Of Strathclyde, Bioengineering Unit

This was a summer job. Although the software I wrote the previous summer was completed and working well when I left it, changes had been made by third parties which required the software to be updated.

Jun 1980 - Aug 1980

Temporary Assistant

University Of Strathclyde, Bioengineering Unit

This was a summer job. The Bioengineering Unit had a need to transfer data between their PDP-11 minicomputer and the university mainframe.Network nodes had been installed at both ends, but they communicated with each other using a low level protocol so I had to implement a file transfer protocol on top of that and also interface to the PDP-11 file system.I had to implement full duplex communications that were interrupt driven. Up to 7 packets of data could be sent at a time, this limit depending on negotiation between both ends when the connection was set up. The system coped with packets received out of sequence. Packets that went missing or failed the checksum check, at either end, had to be re-requested.This was done using RSX-11M macro assembly code.
