Director Of DevelopmentChildren'S Literacy Project - North Carolina Jul 2021 - Mar 2023Durham, North Carolina, United StatesChildren’s Literacy Project improves the literacy skills of elementary school children referred by our partner Title One schools throughout the Triangle by training and supporting volunteer tutors who provide free, long-term, one-to-one instruction using our research-based methodology. We envision a community where all children can read, write, and spell - essential building blocks for future academic success - thereby improving a wide range of health and social outcomes among a population regarded as vulnerable and at-risk. Data indicates that children who are not proficient in reading by third grade are at disproportionate risk of subsequently dropping out of school. As adults, they are more likely to be unemployed or employed in low-paying jobs. Our audacious vision is to break the cycle of generational poverty and mitigate a range of negative outcomes correlated with school failure, including higher rates of incarceration and poor health, by providing vulnerable students the tools they need to be successful. The good news: 90% of our students increase their reading ability to grade level with our intensive, early intervention services.http://www.readwritego.org -

Executive DirectorNorth Carolina Commission On Racial And Ethnic Disparities In The Criminal Justice System Sep 2019 - Jan 2021Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina AreaThe North Carolina Commission on Racial and Ethnic Disparities in the Criminal Justice System (NC CRED) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that works across professional, political and ideological lines to identify, document, and develop strategies to reduce racial disparities in North Carolina’s juvenile and criminal justice systems. We aspire to be a model for the rest of the nation.NC CRED brings together a diverse group of +30 criminal justice leaders and stakeholders who share a commitment to building a more equitable, effective, and humane criminal justice system throughout the state. Represented on the Commission are judges from District Court, Superior Court, and the Court of Appeals; Chiefs of Police and other law enforcement leaders; District Attorneys, Public Defenders, community advocates, and scholars.NC CRED is dedicated to understanding how racial minorities are disproportionately represented in the criminal and juvenile justice systems. We conduct detailed studies that account for all potential explanations. When individuals are similar in all ways except for their race or ethnicity but have vastly different outcomes in the criminal or juvenile justice systems, we can conclude that those systems are unjust. The Commission provides a forum for open dialogue, collective problem-solving, information sharing, and education on the most important developments in racial equity-based criminal justice reform in North Carolina and across the nation. Through its committee work, seminars, and research, NC CRED is involved in a variety of studies and projects related to pretrial justice, policing, bail reform, jury pool information, traffic stop data, prison population, School to Justice Reform, Juvenile Justice, and Raise the Age legislation, for example.www.nccred.org -
