I always tell people, the best education comes from doing the work. In my career, I’ve gone from being a work-a-day barista, to in-house and wholesale education, to sales and social media marketing, to green buying and roasting, to curating a green coffee E-commerce platform that provides coffee roasters with the materials and knowledge to run successful and wonderful companies. Along the way, each role forced me to grow by doing the work, and owning the work, often requiring collaboration across multiple teams in-house and in our supply chain. Whether it was training staff, purchasing quality materials, evaluating operational procedures, or even as simple as making a cup of coffee, each step demanded I learn how to communicate and calibrate. Each step required me to learn a new system, and then pass that system along to others in due course. But those learnings also enriched my life, and showed me that growth is always preferable to stagnation. I currently head up the coffee program for the US arm of Pret a Manger, a global force in the retail and fast casual food industry.
