About Stetson Thacker
Currently, I interpret and classify genetic variants detected by molecular diagnostics for Natera. Formerly, I worked as a clinical informatics specialist/clinical genomics curator at GenomOncology (GO). As a member of GO's content team I helped build, maintain, and develop the knowledge base of our Precision Oncology Platform (POP). POP supports end-to-end tertiary analysis of cancer genomes. This includes trial and therapy matching based on the unique molecular profiles, often derived from next-generation sequencing (NGS) panels, of cancer patients. I also helped design, test, and implement natural language processing (NLP) solutions for NGS and pathology reports. This work enabled the precise curation of unstructured clinical data. While at GO, I built an in-house drug ontology and the germline analysis features in the Pathology Workbench.I have expertise/experience in clinical genetics and precision oncology. This includes a deep familiarity with the basic and clinical research, clinical trial documentation, professional guidelines, NGS technologies, and targeted and immunotherapy drugs.My research background is in genomic medicine focused on cancer and neurodevelopmental conditions. I graduated from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) and Cleveland Clinic's joint Molecular Medicine PhD Program. My thesis research concerned the clinical impact of germline variation in the tumor suppressor gene PTEN. I leveraged data from traditional wet lab techniques, NGS-based experiments, and deep mutational scanning assays to derive translational insights from the measured functional effects of PTEN variation. This work demonstrated that hypomorphic variants associate more closely with neurodevelopmental phenotypes than cancer risk.I hope to continue to build a career in clinical genetics and precision medicine/oncology. I would like to combine my broad base of skills and knowledge to deliver real innovations to the field and improved outcomes to patients. Clinical Genomics Curator
The curator will read, understand, and synthesize documents related to precision medicine, including molecular-based FDA drug approvals, NCCN treatment guideline documents, molecular-based clinical trial protocols, and targeted oncology literature. The curator then uses GenomOncology's Precision Oncology Platform (POP) to input these results into our database using structured ontologies and nomenclature for drugs, diseases, genetic alterations, etc. The curator will identify and propose solutions to challenges that arise and will contribute to further developing our curation workflow and structured ontologies in order to advance our goal of automating clinical interpretation to the greatest extent possible. The curator will also contribute new content related ideas to add and complement existing workflows.
