Stephen is a commercial interior designer and academic with over 40 years experience across both fields. He's a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He has an undergrad diploma in Interior Design from Kingston University and a Masters from Cambridge University, in Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment. He was the Biophilic Design consultant for the Royal College of Physicians new £35 million HQ in Liverpool, The Spine, which was designed by Manchester based architects AHR. His primary role there was to provide the design team with Biophilic and Salutogenic strategies to align key Biophilic Patterns with the WELL and BREAM Building Standards. Its the first building in the world to attain a WELL Platinum for the Fit-out and Construction and a BREEAM (Building Research Establishments, Environmental Assessment Method} Outstanding, for the Structure. With 109 out of a possible 110 WELL V2 credits, its the highest ever acheived by any WELL building in the world. It opened in the Spring of 2021 and is therefore set to become one of the healthiest buildings in the world.He now devotes most of his time to being a Biophilic Design consultant, working from his home in Stroud, in the South Cotswolds, UK.His research interests are in providing strategies for healthier and safer interior environments for a post pandemic world. Using combinationations of Biophilia, UVC lighting and bio-materials working closely with London based lighting design consultants Lighting Design House.
