I am a psychologist and cognitive neuroscientist at UCL. My lab (http://metacoglab.org/ ) aims to link brain and behaviour to subjective experience, and we design experiments to understand the computations supporting the latter. We are interested in both metacognition- what people think or know about their own minds - and consciousness - our subjective experience of the world around us. We think there may be intimate links between both metacognition and consciousness, as formalized in recent computational frameworks we have developed. Much of the research in the lab uses computational models to develop predictions about how subjective variables (such as confidence and awareness reports) vary together with neural and behavioral measures. We employ a range of neuroimaging techniques, primarily MEG and fMRI.I also write for a general audience and in 2021 published a popular science book, Know Thyself, about the science of metacognition (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Know-Thyself-Self-Awareness-Stephen-Fleming/dp/1541672844).
