About Steve Bean

Outdoor enthusiast with over ten years' experience working in outdoor education. I love being in and working the outdoors, the adventure, the exploration, the wild places. I enjoy working with all ages and background but my particular interest is in developing and encouraging young people. In addition to my outdoor work I work closely with my local church as a Youth Leader and am involved in holiday clubs and camps. My passion is for journeying, whether by canoe or by foot. Over the last few years I have been focused on improving my paddling skills with the eventual aim of maxing out all my qualifications. However, part of what led to my decision to become a freelance instructor was the opportunity to do more Duke of Edinburgh's Award work with the potential for other expeditions too.ThenI was an active member of the local Sea Scouts from the age of 11 until I was 18. After leaving school with 8 GCSEs I worked in Starbucks and Canterbury Cathedral, saving up for my gap year in South Africa and a month in Alaska. This and the following Trainee Instructor course (particularly the 6 weeks skiing in Switzerland!) is when I realised I could turn my love of the outdoors into a career. Since then I have worked in outdoor centres in Scotland and Wales and supervised and assessed numerous DofE expeditions across the UK.NowThis year I am working towards my UKCC Level 3 Open Canoe Coaching Certificate and my BCU Moderate Water Endorsement for Sea Kayak. I have recently completed NCC Coasteering Training and am looking to do the BCU SUP Discipline Supporting Module soon, so will be developing these new skills over the next few months.
