Mining the biodiversity of marine animal-associated microbes for the development of novel small molecules for eco-friendly bio-protectants for use in aquaculture, agriculture and in human health. The MARBLES PROJECT (https://marblesproject.eu/) will exploit marine microbial genomes and metagenomes to discover and develop microbial products to (i) ensure the sustainable aquatic cultivation of fish larvae/juveniles, mussels, crustaceans and micro-algae in aquaculture and to ameliorate the use of prophylactic antibiotics in aquacullture which promotes antimicrobial resistance (AMR), (ii) to protect cereals and fruit crops from phytopathogens in agriculture and also (iii) to discover novel drug-leads for use to combat the 'ESKAPE' pathogens - a leading concern of AMR in human health.

This role includes giving tutorials, occasional lectures and grading reports and dissertations). I actively mentor Masters Degree and Ph.D candidates in diverse research areas such as Marine Microbiology, Ecology and Biotechnology; Natural Product Drug Discovery and Development; Genomics and Metagenomics; Novel Biocatalyst Discovery; The Microbiology of Wastewater Treatment & The Microbiology of Biogas Production. My current research work involves metagenomic clone library construction and screening for the discovery of novel algal cell-wall degrading enzymes for application in enzyme-assisted-extraction of biopharmaceutical and nutraceutical compounds. Previously I worked on the Pharmasea Project: A collabarative venture between 24 partners from industry, academia and non-profit organisations focused on biodiscovery research and the development and commercialisation of new bioactive compounds from marine organisms, including deep-sea sponges and bacteria, to evaluate their potential as novel drug leads or ingredients for nutrition or cosmetic applications.
