Attending college opened doors of opportunity that I did not even know existed. My academic journey started with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from UC Irvine. After obtaining a master’s degree in organic chemistry from UCLA, I moved away from chemistry to work in a family business. One year later, I was back in school at UC Irvine where I obtained a Ph.D. with Professor Larry Overman. After a postdoc with Barry Trost at UW Madison, I pursued my love of chemistry as a faculty member at UC Riverside with a research program focused on organic synthesis. I was privileged to serve as Dean of the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station. My next step took me to Wright State University in Ohio where I served as provost. I was attracted to UTC by the opportunity to make a difference at a metropolitan university in the heart of downtown. Our laboratory is the greater Chattanooga area, where students use classroom knowledge to tackle real-world challenges. To see the university and the city grow together in synergy has been exciting. Our community makes UTC a stronger university, and UTC benefits our community.As I begin my second decade as Chancellor at UTC, I remain committed to creating the “Mocs experience” for our students and leveraging our special place as Chattanooga’s university—which is integral to our identity. Together with our faculty, staff, and students, I am dedicated to pursuing knowledge that transforms lives, operating with excellence, and building a community that embraces and cultivates a culture of innovation.I am always interested in talking with fellow educators, professionals, and anyone passionate about the future of higher education.
