As a postdoc with Jim Olson at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, I have been developing a platform to detect and identify cell penetrating peptides. I have devised processes for each of the necessary steps (chemical conjugation, purification, in vitro assays, and validation) to robustly interrogate our library of knotted cystine-dense peptides.

I moved with Dr. Cynthia Kenyon to continue my research identifying novel regulators of aging at CalicoLabs. Although my research continued in an academic fashion, as we were now funded by Google, I was able to pursue my interests more aggressively without traditional funding limitations.

I was a postdoc with Cynthia Kenyon at UCSF attempting to identify novel genetic regulators of longevity by high-throughput siRNA screening for modulators of oxidative stress resistance, where I gained hands-on experience with designing and conducting rigorous high-throughput screens.

As a graduate student, I studied how deficiencies in nuclear lamin proteins contribute to the development of cardiac defects in mice with Dr. Brian Kennedy. During this time, I was allowed relative freedom to pursue research as I saw fit, establishing my skills as an independent researcher. At the same time, I collaborated with numerous labs during this time in order to accomplish my research most efficiently, interacting directly with every other level of scientist ranging from fellow graduate student to PI. I also had the opportunity to mentor four undergraduate research assistants, managing and guiding them through either independent research projects or more routine tasks both contributing towards my research. Finally, I further honed my skills with mouse handling and dissection, as well as developed skills for mouse colony management.

I developed constitutively active variants for coagulation factor VII as a strategy for treatment of hemophilia A and measured their efficacy in mice with Dr. Carol Miao. I also supervised general lab maintenance and developed personnel as a lab manager.
