I attended Boston University as an undergraduate and completed my doctoral degree in philosophy at Brown University. Prior to joining the faculty at Virginia Wesleyan, I held appointments at Kenyon College, Grinnell College, and the University of California (Riverside). For the past four years, I have served as Dean of the Susan S. Goode School of Arts and Humanities at Virginia Wesleyan University.My work in applied ethics and the environment has an international focus, with extensive experience in Vietnam, China, India, and Japan. From 2012-2016, I served on the Executive Board of ASIANetwork, a national organization dedicated to promoting research in Asia. Since 2005, I have served on the executive committee of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges Ethics Bowl program as the Statewide Faculty Coordinator.In 2018, I was honored to receive the SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award, the Commonwealth of Virginia's highest award for faculty excellence. For my international service work, I was awarded the Distinguished International Leadership Award, Dai Nippon Butoku Kai, Japan (2023) and the Martin Luther King Jr. Peace and Justice Award (2008). In addition to numerous scholarly articles, I have authored 13 books in the areas of my specialization. In 2008, I and a team of students produced an award-winning feature-length documentary film, Making Peace with Viet Nam, which examined the challenges of reconciliation in the aftermath of war.
