    During my role as a placement student at Synectics Solutions I was a part of a team of 14 people on the service desk. Every day was a different challenge and I was given opportunities to develop my technical skills such as IT troubleshooting, using Windows systems and managing a windows-based computer (EG reg-edit, computer management, software centre among other services provided for windows by Microsoft) and soft skills such as communication and teamwork. Service desk at Synectics solutions was a very friendly environment where working as a team is very important. An example of this would be our morning meetings designed to discuss the previous day’s work and gives everyone an opportunity to ask for help.Working on service desk was internal only, managing and maintaining computer systems within the company for staff members to use. We were expected to also help the support staff who supported solutions the company offered to our clients, but we had no direct contact with the clients. Service Desk is the first contact for IT issues for users within the company as such, my role was important within the business because within Synectics solutions our staff used Information Technology to carry out their day to day work. These may be software developers or relationship managers. For this reason, Laptops, PCs, and servers are needed to be reliable. A team was also required to fix smaller issues on user workstations to enable all staff in Synectics solutions to work uninterrupted by IT issues to boost productivity.
