My role as an instructional assistant is classified as a co-teacher role within 5th to 8th grade classrooms. I mostly work with Title I students in each classroom. I work with students who are below proficient in language arts and math. I work in every capacity that a lead teacher assumes, except for lesson planning and communicating with the students' guardians. I am very much a part of objective adjustments after the lead teacher establishes the foundation for each lesson plan. It is a common practice for us to divide the class in half so both of us can deliver the day's lesson to a smaller group of students.

My role as a group leader, over the past two summers at LLDC, required me to supervise and teach a group of 15 eight year olds for 8 weeks during the summer. I am also the athletic elective coordinator for the freshman division. This role requires me to create an eight week lesson plan for teaching/coaching basketball, soccer, baseball, and street hockey, for the entire freshman division. I have recently accepted the role of assistant division leader for the sophomore division. This new position gradually reduces my group leader responsibilities, as I go from a group of 15 campers to 10 (or less) campers per week. The assistant division leader position will require me to have more contact with the parents/guardians; making sure they are updated daily on their child’s positive and negative camp experiences.

I served as a volunteer assistant coach for the varsity girls’ basketball team at Burlington City High School. During practices I was responsible for a given group of girls each day. Within these groups, I would teach various basketball fundamentals, as well as techniques specific to be successful within our game plan. We had a great year. We won the South Jersey Freedom Division, but lost in the first round of the playoffs. Also, cultivating the player’s attitudes toward competition and team work was also an intrinsic goal of the coaching staff. We, as a team, received a sportsmanship award from the league, and were recognized at Burlington City Town Hall for our exemplary sportsmanship.

My responsibilities were to conduct a well controlled learning environment, while accomplishing the educational objectives left behind by the absent teacher.
