About Steven Valencia
My greatest motivation is to serve humanity. A little bit of a cliché response, but it’s true! Throughout my countless hours of community service, I’ve been recognized by the President of the United States and was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award, signed by Barack Obama. I continue my volunteer work to this day, from helping at local food banks to volunteering at preschools. I wondered how I can combine my two greatest passions, Computer Science and helping others. During the summer of 2017, I found it. I was selected to do a summer research program at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. My research question was trying to figure out if it was possible to have a computer distinguish more accurately between a benign and malignant skin lesion than a dermatologist. This would allow doctors to spend less time on diagnosing and more time on planning for the next step. Even though my model came out to be 66% accurate, I knew the possibilities would be endless with greater resources.This was truly the first time I saw two different worlds collide and make one single world that I drastically wanted to partake in and it was the world of artificial intelligence. Seeing this made me have the same feeling when I got my first computer—a world I want to explore, a world I want to be a part of, a world I want to change.

- Trained a CNN model to recognize and identify pictures of benign versus malignant skin lesions in order to provide a dermatologist more time on treating patients and less time on diagnosing.
- Using TensorFlow, the model was trained with 26,000 images: 13,000 benign images and 13,000 malignant images.
- Research was conducted with Dr. Zhi Wei, Full Professor, NJIT and a Ph.D. student.
- Resulted in a 66% accurate model.
