The first twenty years of my career were spent as a classroom teacher. I taught mathematics, science, technology, digital arts, animation, yearbook, and media broadcasting. In 2011, I was awarded the honor of being San Diego Mathematics Teacher of Year. I was part of the Ideas 2.0 NGSS Early Adopters grant as a facilitator and worked side-by-side with teachers to implement the NGSS standards in the classroom. I quickly realized that working directly with my colleagues, shaping and guiding their instructional practices, was an exciting way to affect more large-scale educational transformation. After several years of work as an educational technology coach, the opportunity to become an administrator opened up in my district, and I took the challenge. My goal was to gain proficiency in a leadership role while continuing to be a true instructional leader, guiding an entire staff cohesively toward realizing a strong educational vision. I’ve achieved this goal, and my last several years as an administrator have been highly rewarding and successful. During this role, I have established positive relationships and cohesion with staff, students, and parents. I’ve maintained and supported many amazing, long-standing programs while introducing several new initiatives. Though there have been many challenges, being at the helm of a highly specialized school comes with many demands, I have demonstrated strong, efficient, compassionate leadership. However, I am most proud of my ability to continue to work directly with teachers, supporting and guiding them toward collaborative, innovative instructional change. I will endlessly endeavor to be the kind of leader I always hoped for as a teacher, one who is never far away from the heart of education. My extensive and varied experience as a teacher, technology coach and instructional visionary has allowed me to retain my focus through leadership.
Principal On Special Assignment - Educational Technology Department
Oversee the Educational Technology Department at the Lakeside Union SD.
Vice Principal
As an administrator at Riverview International Academy, I had the opportunity to further develop my leadership skills at the site level. Beyond the daily operation of the school, the budget and developing our SPSA, I was able to work at creating a climate of trust and collaboration. Together we had a developed a focus on student learning and improving classroom practices through observation, lesson studies and the use of data.
Technology Tosa
My motivation has always stemmed from my passion in the development of technology integration and innovative instructional practices. During my twenty-four years in Lakeside, I have been a pioneer in these areas and have help pave the way for others throughout the district and county. I was the first to specifically design a learning environment for 21st century teaching and learning. This classroom became the model not only other classrooms in the district, but also for classrooms throughout the county. In addition, I designed a blended learning class to meet the needs of all learners. This class became the model for the county and was visited by other districts and universities. These innovations led to a Math Teacher of the Year award in 2011. In my role as a TOSA in the Ed Tech Department, I was heavily involved in the planning and support of the district vision, which included a district wide 1:1 iPad program. I created professional learning for technology integration, curriculum and pedagogy for K-8 classrooms. Throughout my time as a TOSA, I emphasized the changing of classroom practices over training teachers how to use technology. I always wanted to create/model opportunities for them to learn critical skills and get experiences to help them rethink what they did in the classroom. Whether is was through design thinking, blended learning or any other experience, my professional learning sessions always focused on the pedagogy of the teachers, then the integration of technologies. In order to measure impact, I also implemented instructional rounds and developed a metric to collect data and measure the growth of the teachers
