About Steven Carr
I am the CEO & Co-founder of the Agripreneurship Alliance and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Raised in a rural market town in North Yorkshire, I grew up around farms and worked as a teenager in horticulture and sheep farming, with a family deeply involved in the agri-food sector as butchers and meat/dairy inspectors. This early connection to agriculture shaped my career and passion for rural development. With postgraduate degrees in Community and Youth Work, Education, and Africa & International Development, I’ve spent over 20 years working in community development and education, focusing on youth empowerment and societies in conflict. My experience spans roles in Northern Ireland, Zambia, and Switzerland, as well as consulting for a global company on agripreneurship in Sub-Saharan Africa. In 2017, I co-founded the Agripreneurship Alliance, creating programs like the ‘Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness’ course, which has been offered at universities across Africa. Today, I focus on consulting across Africa, specializing in entrepreneurial ecosystems, research, and project implementation, fostering sustainable growth in the agri-food sector.

Initially working as Programme Manager - Nepal (November 2014 - March 2016), I had responsibility for the management and recruitment of a team of Swiss based volunteers, liaison with the Regional Office and staff in Kathmandu along with planning, operational oversight of the programme, focusing on sustainable agriculture, gender and livelihoods in the Mountain communities of Dhading, Humla and Rasuwa. This program aims to sustainably improve food security and income of poor and disadvantaged mountain communities in these Nepalese districts by increasing and diversifying agricultural productivity with eco-friendly practices and by promoting market access and regional trade. Activities such as the construction of production facilities and storage, provision of appropriate farming equipment, and agricultural and entrepreneurial training for farmers are implemented. These projects focus on the preservation of the environment and climate change by promoting sustainable agricultural practices and increasing the role of women and ethnic minorities in the implementation of said practices. In addition, the promotion of agriculture as a sustainable and productive activity will curb the rural exodus by creating viable jobs in targeted mountain communities. For these projects, Norlha partners with local grassroots organizations to directly serve 900 families and indirectly serve 5’012 persons living in three distinct districts of Nepal. In addition, coordinating post earthquake recovery in the summer of 2015 to support the recovery of our communities in Dhading and Rasuwa and tackling issues of WASH, education, shelter, nutrition and trauma.I continue to work within the Operations Team supporting colleagues with projects in Nepal, Bhutan and China/Tibet.
