I specialize in international arbitration of complex, hi-value commercial disputes in a range of industries. I've worked extensively in the energy, oil and gas, mining, chemical, aerospace, pharmaceutical, entertainment and hospitality fields, and have significant experience resolving licensing, distribution and joint venture disputes, including in numerous high-tech sectors. Over the course of my 37-year career, I've handled many matters involving sovereign entities, including before the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal, and have served as counsel and arbitrator in numerous institutional and ad hoc arbitrations, most notably under the UNCITRAL, ICC, ICDR, LCIA, DIS, SCC, SIAC and JCAA rules. I've been recognized as one of the world's leading international arbitration lawyers in many notable lawyer directories, and have been described by Chambers Global and other publications as "a truly outstanding advocate whose written product and oral advocacy simply astound"; a "masterful advocate who can put together mesmerizing argument"; a "first-class advocate"; and an "outstanding counsel" who is "furiously well-prepared" and a "master strategist." In 2008, I received the California Lawyer of the Year Award for my extraordinary achievement in alternative dispute resolution, and in 2013, I received the Stefan A. Riesenfeld Award from U.C. Berkeley School of Law in recognition of my outstanding contributions to the field of international law. For many years, I was a Lecturer in Law at Stanford Law School, where I taught international arbitration. I'm a frequent author on international arbitration issues and speak regularly on international dispute resolution at conferences across the globe. I'm a past chair of the ABA's International Arbitration Committee, the International Law Section of the California State Bar and the Northern California International Arbitration Club, and I was recently a member of the California Supreme Court's International Arbitration Working Group that led to important changes in California law. Currently, I'm a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and the Singapore International Arbitration Centre Users Council. I am also the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Berkeley Journal of International Law.
