Steven Simon, MD, MPH, is Chief of Staff, VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, and Professor of Medicine (In Residence) and Associate Dean for Veterans Affairs, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Simon serves as the chief medical officer for one of the largest and most complex VA health care systems in the nation, serving over 90,000 Veterans across five counties in Southern California. Dr. Simon oversees the clinical care delivered at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center tertiary care hospital in West LA (formerly known as the Wadsworth VA; 172 beds), two ambulatory care centers (one in the San Fernando Valley and one in Downtown LA), and seven community-based outpatient clinics (Bakersfield, East Los Angeles, Ventura, San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria, San Gabriel, and Santa Barbara). IDr. Simon is also responsible for the clinical care provided at two Community Living Centers (i.e., nursing homes – one in West LA and one in the Valley – with a total of 284 beds) and the West LA Domiciliary, which is a residential rehabilitation and substance use treatment program, with 296 beds. All clinical services (“departments”) at VA Greater Los Angeles report to Dr. Simon through service chiefs, associate chiefs of staff, and two deputy chiefs of staff. Overall, there are approximately 1,000 physicians, other health care providers under Dr. Simon's supervision.In addition, Dr. Simon is a practicing general internist (hospitalist physician), medical educator, and health services researcher. His research focuses on the evaluation of health information technology to improve patient safety and the quality of health care. He has expertise in the adoption of health information technology, the use of health information technology to improve the delivery of health care, especially the use of medications and the care of chronic illness. Dr. Simon has served as principal investigator or co-investigator on numerous studies, included federally funded projects, to evaluate interventions to improve quality of care and patient safety.
