Steve Jobs famously said in his 2005 Stanford graduation speech that careers don’t always make sense as they happen. Eventually, one's experience will coalesce into something that makes perfect sense for where you’re headed in the future. I thought my career was a result of my curious nature. Why else would someone start in an engineering role with automation on the paper manufacturing floor. Move into the information systems space for planning and scheduling, MRP, and MES layers. Learn about the packaging development workflow. See the impact packaging has on supply chains. Move into power and electrification of facilities and production lines. Learn about the paper chemistry involved in delivering product features. Spend time in warehouses learning how to create an agile, efficient supply chain. I currently find myself representing manufacturers in the fields of pulp, paper, and packaging. Weird isn’t it? I experienced all these things at the leading companies in each respective category. Equally important, my customer base over three decades has taught me a lot too.Well, as Steve Jobs said...it all HAS come together for where we are heading. Production, automation, IT, materials, ingredients, power, logistics. Everything one needs to deliver something special, something transformational. We’re in weird times, for everyone, for sure. Paradigms are all going to come crashing down and something new is going to emerge. We’ve seen it happen in so many industries over the last couple decades (see brick and mortar retail for an example, or that computer in your pocket.) I want to be a part of that. Agile, innovative, adaptable, scalable. Beat the competition to the prize by creating the most value for the customer. It’s commerce baby.
