Profile bio

About Steve Stahl

UPDATE Feb 2024: A youthful and early semi-retirement. Is providing me time to begin working on some documentary ideas around my life and work in the dawn of 24/7 Cable News. I have a unique insiders view and video archive of my 40 yrs in the business starting in 1984 with CNN. In addition to video and photos covering most of the era. I am willing to license or partner with documentarians seeking to tell the story of a sea change in the industry as CNN rose to dominance. About me: I started my career in radio as an early teen. I moved in to TV in college, and worked for CNN from 1984 to 2012. I joined the launch team for Al Jazeera America in spring of 2013, prior to launch, thru til it's closing in April 2016. My professional DNA is based in solid, in-depth, quick-paced, substantive Live TV. Presently I am enjoying life beyond TV news as a Tech Manager for MLB & NHL. I believe the best managers lead by example and should be part of the team, not isolating themselves in an office. I like to maintain an on-going dialog and partnership with my staff. These relationships have led to great ideas from the team bubbling up to be implemented, and that as we built new facilities, those facilities met the needs of the technical staff and producers. My CNN career culminated with a 7 yr stint overseeing the Technical Operations team (studio and control room operations staff) in the CNN Washington Bureau as Director of Technical Operations. A 40+ person staff, including 2 subordinate staff supervisors.Over this period we made pivotal changes in the production workflows, and repeatedly renovated the facility infrastructure, with moves to HD, and multiple control room builds and upgrades. The most recent of these upgrades, included upgrading two control rooms and a total rebuild of a third, in addition to a total rebuild of the bureau's studio facilities. These facilities have become CNN's special event control room/studios for CNN’s most demanding live coverage. I have a proven track record of not only getting the job done on time and on budget, but also maintaining a positive work environment. In recent years, I have returned to my roots in the control room. Tech Managing shows for CBS News, MLB Network and NHL Network. Live tv production has been my passion for my entire career.

Listed skills include Broadcast, Video, Television, Video Production, and 46 others.

Director Of Operations

Oversight, leadership and departmental management of CNN’s studio, control room, QC, video shading, robotic camera control staff. Demonstrated leadership of 40+ person, multi-disciplined, production team in CNN’s premier newsgathering bureau. Experience with building broadcast facilities, including a state-of-the-art news control rooms and studios designed in 2011 and launched in 2012. The control room and studio are CNN’s most technologically advanced and designed to handle the most demanding special events coverage, beginning with the network’s 2012 political conventions, presidential debates, election night and presidential inauguration coverage. I also led DC Tech Ops staff in the initial upgrade of bureau control rooms and studios to HD production in 2007 and a more thorough upgrade in 2009. These major technical changes maintained an error-free production standard on the SD facilities, while simultaneously upgrading to an HD production infrastructure and seamless transition to the new systems. I joined CNN’s DC team as the bureau staff was expanded and tasked with launching complete show production, rather than sub-switching sources for completion by a control room in CNN’s Atlanta HQ, as had been the production model. This evolution in production required extensive changes in infrastructure and staff on a short timeline. The DC bureau generates a near continuous flow of program content to all of CNN networks with reporter and guest support, in addition to breaking news and special event coverage. Special event coverage under my leadership included the Jan 2009 Inauguration Coverage (the largest in US history), Network Pool coverage of Presidential State of the Union Speeches 2006 (First ever in HD and surround sound) & 2010 in addition to many other smaller events. I’ve demonstrated a passion for staff development and positively motivating the production team thru periods of change while maintaining our production standards.
