The association was formed to support the growing number of electronic reporters, transcribers and courts that were adopting audio and video recording as the record keeping method for their courtrooms. AAERT’s mission was to establish a framework within which the ER community could organize to promote electronic reporting methods in courts, oppose legislation intended to restrict the use of non-stenographic reporting methods, and to establish a meaningful certification program for electronic reporters and transcribers.In 1994, AAERT held its first annual conference in Las Vegas, NV. Today, it has grown to represent a large and vibrant community of ER professionals and has a well established certification program that has been adopted by a number of states as the only acceptable certification for ER reporters and transcribers.

Under Steve Townsend’s leadership, A/V Tronics was the first electronic recording and transcription company to automate the distribution and management of court recordings and begin to use digital solutions.Between 1991 and 1995, A/V Tronics grew to become the largest electronic reporting firm in the Southwest U.S. with offices in Phoenix, Tucson and Los Angeles. In 1995, Townsend retained his ownership position, but removed himself from daily management of A/V Tronics and joined a small Australian software company, FTR Limited.
