I am honored to serve as STTI's first President and appreciate the opportunity to work with its Board of Directors and Executive Committee made up of industry leaders from every sector of the court reporting industry.STTI is a 501(c)6, non-profit organization formed by leaders from across the industry united in the belief that uncompromising quality should be a requirement for all speech-to-text enterprises and practitioners and that no single technology holds exclusivity on such quality. Indeed, it is the position of STTI’s leadership that collective service of the legal community’s record-keeping needs in today’s market requires the use of stenographers, voice writers, digital reporters, and videographers, all of this while we look to harness the capabilities of new technologies.

Elected to the AAERT Board of Directors in May of 2014, Townsend campaigned on the premise that the single most important goal for AAERT right now is to increase membership. With the growth of digital recording and the decline of stenographic reporters, the opportunity for growth is immediate and large. The larger the association, the more value each member will receive from membership. FTR is a software development company founded in Perth, Australia. It is the world's largest supplier of digital recording solutions for courts, government agencies, law enforcement and city councils. Townsend was hired in 1995 to establish North American operations. Later that year, the company was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.In 1997, Townsend was named Managing Director of FTR. Between 1997 and 2007, Townsend was responsible for worldwide operations. Under his leadership, the Company launched two highly successful courtroom recording solutions, FTR Gold and TheRecord. FTR sold and installed more than 20,000 recording solutions in more than 40 countries. As CEO of this successful public company, Townsend demonstrated exceptional skill in strategic planning, breaking into an early market, building and leading a professional software development team, and working successfully with employees, vendors, partners and customers in a global environment.

In 1993 Steve Townsend and two other incorporators co-founded the American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers (AAERT). The association was formed to support the growing number of electronic reporters, transcribers and courts that were adopting audio and video recording as the record keeping method for their courtrooms. AAERT’s mission was to establish a framework within which the ER community could organize to promote electronic reporting methods in courts, oppose legislation intended to restrict the use of non-stenographic reporting methods, and to establish a meaningful certification program for electronic reporters and transcribers.In 1994, AAERT held its first annual conference in Las Vegas, NV. Today, it has grown to represent a large and vibrant community of ER professionals and has a well established certification program that has been adopted by a number of states as the only acceptable certification for ER reporters and transcribers.

A/V Tronics provides audio/video recording and transcription services to courts, lawyers, government agencies and public meeting clients. In the early 1990s, the electronic court recording industry operated on 4-channel tape recorders, cassette tapes and FedEx. Under Steve Townsend’s leadership, A/V Tronics was the first electronic recording and transcription company to automate the distribution and management of court recordings and begin to use digital solutions.Between 1991 and 1995, A/V Tronics grew to become the largest electronic reporting firm in the Southwest U.S. with offices in Phoenix, Tucson and Los Angeles. In 1995, Townsend retained his ownership position, but removed himself from daily management of A/V Tronics and joined a small Australian software company, FTR Limited.
