My favourite part of being a program evaluator and a facilitator is seeing people develop new understandings about their work. Getting to new understandings about your work is a journey that requires communication through structured conversations. I am trained and experienced in facilitating conversations - I love to learn about your work and its challenges because that’s the starting point to develop a research plan that leads to important insights for you. I am fond of saying Analytics is a social process. This means that successful program analytics (and program evaluation) takes the time to work with others to find out what questions all people involved in the work want to answer. Don’t worry about getting it all sorted at the beginning because the process is not always linear – we might start with some questions and then add new ones as the work unfolds. For example, always ask - What problems are you trying to solve with this program or initiative? And when I am asked to make a “dashboard”, I always ask - Who is the driver? … because a vehicle dashboard implies a driver who cares about the speed, engine indicators, and range of their vehicle.
