Managing media relations for the WA Electoral Commission in the lead-up to and following the 2021 State Election.

I am a primary contact point for media enquiries for the Department of Communities on the full range of its activities, on a proactive and reactive basis. I write media statements and media responses and liaise and negotiate regularly with a variety of print, electronic and sector media.I also acted in the role of Manager of Media Relations for the Department of Communities and was tasked with forming a new media liaison unit, combining the media units of five separate State Government agencies into an integrated, cohesive and functional unit, with the necessary corporate support, policy frameworks and working relationships to operate successfully.

I was a member of the Department of Communities - Housing (formerly the Housing Authority) media team, operating from the agency's head office. I worked closely with the Chief Executive Officer, corporate executive and private and community sector partners, researching and writing media responses, media statements and speeches on a range of housing portfolio matters for the Minister for Housing and for the agency. I was also a member of several working groups, providing media and communications advice to ‘mission critical’ projects for the Department of Communities.

This role had responsibility for all of the Department of Training and Workforce Development’s communications and marketing activities, and I managed a team of nine professionals involved in marketing, public relations, media liaison and events. I also had responsibility for the Western Australian Training Awards and was the custodian of the agency’s various brands.My branch also had responsibility for the agency’s internal communications, internet and intranet.

This was a ‘whole of agency’ role, managing a small team and working across DTF’s diverse businesses: Treasury, State Revenue, Government Procurement, Building Management and Works, Strategic Projects and Shared Services.I was a contact point for media, working closely with the Under Treasurer and senior agency executives on often complex economic and financial issues. I wrote media responses and media statements on a range of matters for the Treasurer, the Minister Assisting the Treasurer and Department of Treasury and Finance executives. My branch also had carriage of the Department’s internal communications, internet and intranet.

This role had responsibility for corporate communications for major works projects being managed by the Department of Housing and Works, and was transferred to the Department of Treasury and Finance’s Building Management and Works business in early 2009. These projects included Perth Arena, the Old Treasury Building development and the Albany Entertainment Centre.I worked regularly in partnership with corporate communications professionals from other State Government agencies, private sector construction companies, property developers and industry groups as well as architects and designers.

As Public Relations Manager for the Department of Transport (subsequently the Department for Planning and Infrastructure), I was responsible for a range of the Departments' public relations activities. I advised senior management on media and public relations issues, developed communications strategies, maintained relationships with key media and had responsibility for the strategic and operational management and direction of the Communications branch. This encompassed communications policy issues, budget matters, business planning, contract management, recruitment and staff development. I also acted on two occasions as Media Secretary to the Minister for Police and Emergency Services.

In this role I operated both at a strategic and operational level in the development and implementation of a range of public relations and marketing activities designed to raise the profile both of the state of Western Australia and specific individual world-class events.

This multi-faceted role had the primary objective of acting as a contact point for media liaison for Telstra in WA. I arranged briefings for journalists with Telstra management, prepared media releases on various matters and was regularly interviewed and quoted in the media as Telstra’s spokesman on state-level issues relating to the corporation and its activities.

Throughout this time I worked as a Segment Producer and Researcher for a number of television programs including Looking Good, Animal Hospital and Forty Years of Television for the Nine Network in Sydney and Sydney Weekender for Channel Seven in Sydney. I also worked for a period of time as the Weekend Chief-of-Staff for National Nine News in Perth, responsible for operational aspects of the production of evening news bulletins. This position involved decision-making with regard to news stories, dealing with people and organisations involved in news stories and ensuring the smooth running of the newsroom.

During this period I worked as a TV News Cameraman with TVW Channel Seven and NEW Channel Ten in Perth, on programs such as Channel Ten’s Eyewitness News and Seven Nightly News and State Affair for Channel Seven. Career highlights in these roles include the shooting of news and current affairs material covering the 1988 Royal Visit, the 1989 state election, the 1987 and 1990 federal elections, Rally Australia (1988, 1989 and 1990), the 1990 World Swimming Championships, the 1988 World Expo in Brisbane and various network assignments in New Zealand during the 1987 America’s Cup defence.
