Nrc Postdoctoral Researcher
Carbon nanotubes are an exciting class of nanomaterial with significant potential for a range of applications including digital-electronics, solar-energy, and bio-imaging. Application development, however, has been significantly hindered by a lack of nanotube specific characterization and separation techniques for samples that drastically vary in size and structural composition. In my postdoctoral work at NIST, I am developing solution phase processing methods to sort carbon nanotube dispersions by length, diameter, electronic type, and helical handedness. I additionally apply various spectroscopic techniques to better understand nanotube surface-solvent interactions and how these relate to the underlying mechanisms of nanotube separation. At a more fundamental level we are interested in studying how colloidal nanoparticle systems interact with complex aqueous environments.
Graduate Student Researcher
• Developed an analytical fluorescence fluctuation spectroscopy method to characterize heterogeneous carbon nanotube samples by length, composition, and aggregation state • Developed an automated single-particle tracking technique to measure the length distributions of aqueous carbon nanotube samples using NIR fluorescence microscopy • Applied NIR fluorescence microscopy to measure structure-specific absorption cross sections of single-wall carbon nanotubes I worked independently and through collaborations to develop state of the art instrumentation and analysis methods for nanoparticle systems, particularly single-wall carbon nanotubes. I obtained valuable experience in automated data processing in both Matlab and LabView environments. Additionally, I gained expertise in characterizing and modeling the Brownian motion and electronic structure of nanomaterials.
