As Head of Product Management, I led a team of Product Managers and UX Designers, focusing on clarifying our Unit’s purpose and the reasons behind our projects. I coached the team to enhance their skills and implemented necessary structures and processes for success, including co-creating OKRs for our objectives. I also represented our Unit in the product management steering group, guiding our strategy and roadmap.Under my leadership, we launched 12 products on the Mendix Marketplace, including self-service capabilities, and initiated an e-commerce journey. By collaborating with early adopters, we increased our Marketplace’s daily active users inline with company goals for self-service product purchases.

As Senior Product Manager for Enterprise Integration I was responsible for driving growth through strategic relationships with PTC, Siemens and Dassault Systemes.The role was truly cross-functional, requiring me to work closely with partners, customers, sales, services, and marketing teams. I ensured the successful adoption of a new product into two lighthouse customers while protecting an important revenue stream for the company.I was responsible for defining and executing the Enterprise Integration portfolio strategy, and promoting it in webinars, conferences, and user group meetings.

AVEVA develops a portfolio of enterprise software across many different technology platforms, and it is through working on such a diverse solution set that I gained experience building desktop, web and mobile applications for on–premises, cloud and hybrid use cases.In my role as Platform Strategy Manager, as well as continuing with some of my previous responsibilities, I provided strategic and architectural leadership in the Platform Strategy and Architecture team.Working alongside the SVP of Platform, I clarified the strategy and business case for how AVEVA can develop from a traditional software business to a SaaS business therefore fulfilling one of AVEVA’s strategic growth themes. I’m proud to say this material was used to justify new investment into that company-wide transformation project, and I was the strategy representative of the task force team responsible for the launch of the first SaaS solution in October 2016.

In this role I provided leadership to the product management team through a community of practice which I initiated. I also brought consistency to the way the team prioritised its investments and the process now forms part of AVEVA’s ISO 9001 certification process.I was responsible for interoperability which saw me define the business requirements for an orchestration solution which is now an integral part of AVEVA’s solutions.A key AVEVA corporate strategy was to target adjacent markets by partnering. For this reason the third dimension of this role of managing technical partnerships was highly visible in the business and saw me lead engagements with global systems integrators, hosting partners and other Independent Software Vendors.

Picking up the product management reigns of a product which was added to the portfolio through acquisition, and which applied to a mature market where it had little penetration had its challenges. Despite this, as the product evangelist it was my job to convince my colleagues of its value but also to present its benefits at conferences and webinars. Recognising that the product was in decline led me to create a requirements specification for a new product in a complementary domain considering the product’s fit within the portfolio, an analysis of the competitive landscape, its value proposition, a projected ROI, and its route to market. I’m pleased to say the product now has several happy customers, and it was my work in this role which earned me a promotion to Senior Product Manager.

Once again I took on a Business Analysis role but this time it was working for a corporate function whose responsibility it was to provide specialist product expertise to sales, and to funnel requirements into the engineering teams. Without this function it was felt that the product's value proposition and roadmap was unclear. As a result of a reorganisation an opportunity arose for me to further my career and move into product management.

This gave me another string to my bow where I successfully managed projects with budgets up to £500k. I quickly learnt the importance of looking ahead for potential roadblocks, a characteristic I regularly depend on to this day. I also qualified as a Scrum Master during this time. An office closure saw me relocate to Cambridge and return to a product-centric business analysis role.

I look back on this period as my software apprenticeship. I was part of a small product team with a typical small business mindset which meant I was fortunate enough to input into all aspects of the product’s lifecycle, from initial requirements gathering, sales support, through to producing documentation and leading product training. After 6 years I took the opportunity to broaden my experience as a project manager.
