I have just completed the final year of my Environmental Health degree at Ulster University (May 2024), following a one-year Environmental Health work placement with Ards and North Down Borough Council, and am now seeking to start my career in the profession. During this placement, I rotated weekly through each department, gaining experience in all areas of Environmental Health. This included formal sampling experience and extensive shadowing of Environmental Health officers during routine inspections and investigations.Additionally, I gained experience working for the Home Safety team both my home borough of Ards and North Down, as well as in the Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council area, for over two months in 2023. Finally, to demonstrate my commitment to the Environmental Health profession I am currently enrolled in the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health's (CIEH) professional pathway to become a registered Environmental Health Practitioner. As of writing in May 2024, I have passed stage 1 (of 2) with the final stage (professional interview) scheduled for November 2024. Environmental Health modules include:• Health and safety law and practice. • Environmental protection and sustainability. • Housing and healthy living environments.• Food safety law and practice.• Law, governance and society.Additional Skills and Qualifications• Significant experience using Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.• Qualifications in PC hardware, networking and support: Comptia A+ certified, Network+ certified, Microsoft Certified Desktop Service Technician (MCDST). • Python programming experience (intermediate level but always learning).Formal Environmental Health training at university has only strengthened my passion for the profession. Furthermore, my work on health and safety in the waste industry while at university led to me being named the 2022 Student Ambassador by the Waste Industry Safety & Health (WISHNI) forum.
