API is one of the largest pharmaceutical wholesalers in Australia, supplying pharmacies around the country with everything from prescription drugs to over the counter remedies. API has achieved this feat as one of the country’s biggest through its partnership with Priceline. The company has an approximate turnover of $3billion per annum, with 9 distribution centre’s spread across all states of Australia. My role at API was in the procurement & merchandising team as a Planner/analyst. Due to the structure of the department I was responsible for 1/3rd of the company’s stock control parameters, or to translate that into a dollar value, $1 Billion Dollars. As well as my role in the merchandise team, I was asked to join the project team behind the scenes tasked with implementing the SAP system. The project team was responsible for the planning, testing & implementation of SAP in cohesion with SAP consultant experts & a number of Key stake holders within the different areas of the business. This process took well over a year to complete, with its end date being April 15. The implementation of SAP into API was the biggest system overhaul in the world for any pharmaceutical business, highlighting just how big the task at hand was. My time at API was brief in that I was there for a little over a year, however I gained some excellent experience outside of accounting in areas I had not had too much exposure too previously, enhancing myself & my skills.

They have a large network of sites across Australia and a very diverse accounting system in order to handle of all the clients and their individual products. Being contracted in for 2 months I was instructed to aid in the preparation of monthly management accounts, statistical analysis for the budgetary team and preparation of financial records for the external audit due in May. I had 2 new pieces of account software to learn which I did quickly and efficiently, in order to keep pace with the rest of the accounting functions. I also had to create a new reporting function for the CFO using excel and some marco functions, in order to collate a large amount of data, at a high level, which is now used on a monthly basis to project financial result to members of the board. .

West Coast Pastoral is a family run dairy farm located in Cobram, Victoria. I noticed an advert on gumtree posted by West Coast, which was a 1 month contract working on the farm. They required 18 months worth of bookkeeping and GST returns submissions dating backwards from June 2012. I accepted the job as early exposure to the Australian tax legislation in order to pick up the slight differences to British tax law. Once I had completed the financial statements I had been contracted to do, I gave the accounts to West Coast pastorals accountant, who were to finalise the accounts and submit them.
