Reader in Heritage Visualisation at the Digital Design Studio of the Glasgow School of Art. Studied a combined honours degree in Computer Science and Archaeology at the University of Glasgow and completed his PhD in three dimensional modelling of early medieval sculpted stones, also at the University of Glasgow, in 2003. Work at the Digital Design Studio covers all aspects of heritage visualisation and the use of new technologies to create records, analyse, interpret, re-interpret and represent every form of heritage from built to intangible. Current projects and research interests focus on uses of new technologies for digital recording, data visualisation and information gathering and how these processes transform and impact on the relationships between the individual, academia and broader communities of interest and the heritage being studied.

I had lead role in ADS research, development and dissemination. I designed, managed, and delivered a number of major national, European and transatlantic projects (see attachment) and have a very successful track record in writing funding applications. I played a key role in identifying long-term strategic objectives, and was instrumental in positioning the ADS at the heart of a number of international initiatives, including EDL Foundation projects and European digital infrastructure projects. I instigated a number of innovative resource discovery approaches relying on faceted classification, data mining, DOI and semantic technologies. I also directly managed the ADS technical team and I was involved in recruitment, financial management and planning. The ADS was the recipient of the DPC Decadal award for outstanding contribution to digital preservation over the last 10 years and the BAA award for best archaeological innovation in 2012, the ADS was also instrumental in the York Archaeology Department’s successful bid for the Queen's Anniversary Prize for Excellence in Higher and Further Education in 2011.

I had sole responsibility for managing the Sites and Monuments Record and I was also directly involved in WoSAS’s planning and development control, policy and advice function. These responsibilities included monitoring planning applications (ranging from single house developments to wind farms and major infrastructure works), identifying potential risks to the archaeology, proposing mitigation and agreeing this with developers and their commercial archaeological contractors. This was followed by the subsequent monitoring of the projects in the field, from DBA to field survey to full-excavation. As a result I gained a broad knowledge of all forms of archaeology in Scotland and the threats it faces, as well an ability to deal with large, complex projects involving multiple, often competing, interests.
