Design Depot RTU systems for monitoring of electrical status of maintenance facilities, shore supply systems and DC switching.

Electrical Systems Maintenance Engineer

E Gate, West Melbourne

Based out of E GATE, North Melbourne and working in the Power and communications division, MV AC and MV DC switch gear are installed and operational in some 48 sub stations through out the Melbourne Metro area. These are controlled and monitored remotely via an RTU system incorporating hard wired interfaces, Modbus serial monitoring, Conitel and DNP3. In 2011 The RTU system was upgraded to a newly designed TCP/IP LOGICA system. This was optic fibre linked back to Carlton control center to a newly designed operator system to allow for higher speed control and monitoring of existing subs.Also required are, coordination, design and supervision of companies to provide HV (11KV, 22KV), LV (415V) and DC traction cabling supplies to/from the subs (Both via under ground and over head). This also involves Electrolysis mitigation circuit installation and monitoring. All AC High Voltage protection systems are coordinated with supply authorities as are the DC protection systems that operate the tram network. This includes protection studies for the tram systems future expansion. Some 50 new E Class trams have been procured along with provision of 14 new substations. Development of specifications, land approvals and design of future infrastructure will be under taken by the power and communications division. Projects such as Depot upgrades to accommodate the new trams are under taken as well.Business KPI reporting and preparation of documentation such as work instructions and maintenance plans are under taken to keep track of budget , quality and safety targets in a wide range of works. Power & communications must deliver scheduled maintenance work, provide resources for breakdowns and design, installation & commission of renewal projects.

With a team of up to 13 electrical engineers and designers the electrical design was handed over to the Aker Melbourne office. Originally the project was to be delivered from Santiago Chile but scope increase, resource availability and time constraints meant the project, involving $230 million dollars of electrical equipment, would be run from Chile, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane simultaneously.The project called for design of 4 substations, Cable raceways, Cables sizing, Vendor data checks, lighting, UPS and general power requirements (Distribution board designs). There were some 300 electric motors to be 3D modeled into the plant using PDS 3D design software. This had to be coordinated with other disciplines inputting to the design of the plant. (Piping, Instrumentation, Structural, Mechanical) My main job as lead was to assign engineering and design resources as I saw fit to ensure deliverable items were issued on time. I also had design tasks of my own and provided progress reporting to project management along with variation claims, preparation of technical specifications and scopes of work.
