About Stuart Roberts

An award-nominated writer, communications professional, and former journalist, with wide-ranging experience of managing sector-leading comms teams at one of the world's top research universities. Now, as Cambridge University Library's first-ever Head of Communications, I am responsible for formulating and implementing a comprehensive communications strategy for one of the world's great libraries and research collections - and a network of more than 30+ faculty and departmental libraries across the University.During my time at the University of Cambridge I have led and worked on communication campaigns around a £1bn capital project (the largest of its type in the education sector), the university's 800th anniversary, and many of the university's biggest news stories, collaborating with the late Professor Stephen Hawking among others. I have also chaired and presented at European Academy conferences on communicating research for institutions across Europe and Africa. Working across news, features, film, podcasts and social media, I am a skilled writer, editor and storyteller. I introduced and continue to lead on the use of digital storytelling platform Shorthand across Cambridge University to author and curate our news, long-form and picture-led content. Since its introduction, Cambridge Shorthand stories have been viewed well in excess of ten million times (case study below). I have been shortlisted three times in the annual Shorthand Awards, which recognise some of the best digital storytelling from major brands, corporations and news outlets across the world. As Deputy Head of Research Communications at Cambridge, I worked with academics, researchers and Nobel Prize winners to promote and publicise Cambridge research to a worldwide audience, working with key journalists and broadcasters, and developing innovative content for Cambridge's online and social media audiences. I also have significant experience in crisis communications, including the much-lauded worldwide appeal to help find Charles Darwin's stolen Tree of Life notebooks - anonymously returned to the library (in a pink gift bag) in March 2022.

Listed skills include Social Media, Public Relations, Journalism, Editing, and 12 others.
