Dr Stuart Simpson is an expert in sediment quality assessment, with more than 20 years of research experience in the field of environmental risk assessment, including both research (method development) and its application (consulting to industry), including dredging and contaminated site remediation. His major research interest is sediment quality assessment, focussing on the quantification of the form (speciation), behaviour (reactivity, fate and processes controlling speciation, bioavailability), ecotoxicological effects (chronic effects and bioaccumulation) and the development of guidelines for regulating contaminants in sediments. This research involves understanding cause-effect relationships between contaminant and non-contaminant stressors and biological receptors and the development and application of environmental risk assessment tools. He has a broad interest in the analytical and environmental chemistry of contaminants in aquatic environments; fate and reactivity, factors modifying bioavailability, and interactions with non-chemical stressors. Stuart has a broad knowledge of environmental risk assessment. He has a strong history of applying this knowledge to achieve useful outcomes for industry and government. For industry, projects have included advising on ‘sound practice’ and assisting with complex assessments of environmental impacts from proposed, active, or decommissioning industries (including remediation strategies for contaminants at legacy sites). For government (State and Federal), projects have included guideline and assessment framework development, expert reviews and advisory roles. His research skills include that assessment of fate and potential effects of contaminants in both freshwater and marine environments, and multiple environmental media (waters, sediments, soils and biota tissues). Working closely with government, the best of this science becomes incorporated into revisions of guidance, guidelines and assessment frameworks.
