About Stuart Whitten
Research Director, Sustainability Pathways Program, CSIRO Environment. The Sustainability Pathways program is focused on supporting, driving and navigating sustainability transitions with the Australian community. Our research is framed by the challenges posed by living in a period of rapid environmental and social change. The program's research is directed towards working with community, government and business to navigate towards a sustainable future encompassing:- Our journey towards net zero and a smaller material footprint (circular economy).- Climate resilient, prosperouse, and biodiverse regions, cities and infrastructure.- Engaging with indigenous economic participation alongside bringing indigenous science and knowledge into our work- Responsible innovation where we are seeing disruptive changes to food, environment and other systems from new technologies and climate. Sustainability Pathways researchers do this by bringing together diverse perspectives, science, and leading-edge technologies in partnership with stakeholders. We listen to diverse people, their values, hopes and perspectives and work with them to identify change points and develop pathways to transition and transform their systems towards sustainable futuresAs a researcher, Dr Whitten is the Activity Lead for Economic impacts of Climate Risk work stream with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and is an independent Independent Expert Panel member for the GBR 2050 plan. Stuart is an expert in environmental and institutional economics with specialisation in the design and delivery of environmental markets including auctions and tenders, biodiversity offsets and cap and trade approaches. He has worked on the design and implementation of environmental markets for the Australian Government, state governments (Reef Tender, Environmental Stewardship Program, Forest Conservation Fund) and for several regional natural resource management groups. Stuart’s recent research has explored the economic implications of a transition to net zero carbon emissions for Australia, economics and policy of Great Barrier Reef water quality, and the economics of natural capital and biodiversity on private land.
