Information & Planning Officer
I worked in a temporary capacity at Millar & Bryce, a company specialising in services for the legal sector. My job entails the creation of bespoke deed plans for clients (using ArcGIS), often working to tight deadlines. The job requires a working knowledge of legal terms and documents, especially in relation to title deeds and dispositions. I communicate with clients via telephone and email on a daily basis. I also undertake Plans Reports (Levels 1-3) on existing deed plans, necessitating the interpretation and understanding of deed plans of varying quality.
Renewables Planning Officer
I was Renewables Planning Officer at this small Edinburgh and Perth-based renewables company, specialising in onshore wind and solar energy. I was solely responsible for the production of the GIS mapping for each individual project. This ranged from simple site layouts, to more complex constraints mapping (utilising buffers and overlays), cultural heritage and ecological mapping (using a range of data sources) and landscape and visual impact assessments (LVIAs). I undertook numerous site visits across the north east of Scotland to collect spatial data (using GPS), to meet potential clients and to undertake photography for the production of photomontages. I collated the above information into written reports to be submitted to local planning authorities, in order to gain consent. I had a 100% success rate in the reports I submitted.
Gis Co-Ordinator
As a GIS Co-ordinator, I was responsible for adding digitized sections of fibre optic cable to the national geospatial network. The network is held on a GIS called G/Technology, which necessitated my learning new GIS software. My tasks included interrogating Excel databases for splicing and cable information, ensuring all drawn cables were spliced correctly, importing geospatial data into the GIS, and undertaking quality control (QC) checks on my colleague’s work. My overall QC grade averaged 99.7% and I achieved the highest score in my group whilst training.
House Administrator
Whilst establishing my design business I took the role of administrator for Ashley Cooper House care home for people with physical and learning disabilities. This was a challenging and often difficult environment in which to work, and involved my having to think on my feet, multi-task and prioritise. I worked tirelessly with the home manager to transform the home to one that was threatened with closure, to 'Most Improved Home of 2008'. As well as my usual activities such as processing payroll, ordering supplies, maintaining petty cash, writing reports and taking minutes, I also took it upon myself to learn to drive the house minibus, enabling the residents to take day trips, which they thoroughly enjoyed.
Architectural Assistant
I worked as an architectural assistant for this small London practice for almost 2 years. Over this time, I progressed from model-making, 3D modelling and producing RIBA Stage C-D documents through to designing elements for exterior improvements to a primary school, running that job through to completion as well as project managing a £700k, 670m2 office refurbishment job for a high-profile blue-chip bank at the tender age of 23.I also worked on publicity material for a development of eco-friendly homes in Brixton, master planning for a residential scheme in Norwich town centre, and initial sketch designs for a new-build primary school in Trinidad & Tobago.
