Crossrail West OOCPA, IEP and Outer StationsAfter the collapse of Carillion I continued in the below role for Amey who took on the remaining contract scope. Around this time the two other design managers left the project and I took over the remaining Arup designs along with the new Outer Stations scope which had only recently started. This was being designed by Amey Consulting and posed a whole new set of challenges. Although on the surface this was a simple package of platform extensions at Slough and Maidenhead Stations the programme was extremely tight, and the outline design had only just begun. Longstanding issues (e.g. unknown drainage outfalls and gauging specification) needed to be identified and resolved straight away to meet the very ambitious deadlines.The scope was also subject to changes to utilise a bespoke prefabricated platform system designed and built by MegaTech. Integrating this design with all the multidisciplinary packages Amey Consulting were producing was a major challenge, especially given that each needed to use different CAD formats that weren't compatible with each other.

Crossrail West OOCPA and IEPAs part of Network Rail’s Crossrail surface works programme Carillion were awarded the Old Oak Common and Paddington Approaches contract which also included works at Paddington Station to accommodate the imminent introduction of new Hitachi Class 800/801 IEP trains. Originally the detailed design was being developed by Arup, but as the volume of work grew several packages we awarded to TSP which I was responsible for delivering.In OOCPA this comprised Portobello Junction which required the remodelling of five crossovers as well as two connections to the Crossrail tunnels projects. There was also a package of Traction Power works to support the increased electric train service including the removal of existing OLE Booster equipment and installation of new feeding structures, HV cables, ATF wires and a return screen conductor. For IEP the scope consisted of significant remodelling of Platforms 12 and 13 and electrification of Platforms 1, 2, 12 and 14 which required significant supporting civils works including the replacement of a footbridge and modifications to another as well as canopy cutbacks. Remodelling and energisation of Royal Oak Sidings was also required.The project has had to overcome a number of challenges. Most notably the introduction of Group Standard GL/RT1210 complicated electrification of Paddington Platforms and led to significant scope increases. Similarly the introduction of the 12kA fault current from the new AT OLE system required significant upgrades to OLE equipment and lineside equipment bonding.This project was the first time that I had been involved in the detailed commercial management of a designer’s account and I was responsible for reviewing all change quotations submitted by TSP. This was particularly challenging as the project has faced a significant amount of change with over 600 client instructions resulting in over 250 variations from TSP which increased their contract value from £2m to £7m.

Stoke Gifford IEP DepotStoke Gifford Depot was the largest of the three depots being built for Hitachi’s new fleet of IEP trains on the Great Western Mainline. The facility was built on an abandoned landfill site requiring heavy earthworks throughout, replacement of a damaged culvert and substantial contamination remediation. The installation comprised of two servicing spines with CET, fuelling and screenwash facilities, a bi-directional carriage wash, automatic wheel and pantograph inspection equipment, a wheel lathe and twelve stabling sidings. There was also a two road maintenance shed with overhead cranes, diesel extract systems, equipment drops and a depot personnel protection system. The initial design was based upon the servicing requirements of the depot and I played a key role in the production of a site layout which when modelled was able to meet the onerous constraints. Through the following outline and detailed design phases I was directly responsible for the ongoing management of our main designers (Arup – rail systems, RPS – buildings, Foreman Roberts – M&E) in order to deliver value designs on programme.Key design challenges included delayed train design information, programme misalignment between our works and Network Rail connections, interfaces between different designers and procurement of specialist equipment.Being responsible for all the depot design from concept stage and not being absolutely constrained by Network Rail Standards allowed us many opportunities for value engineering. I was directly responsible for identifying many opportunities including creating a layout of greater simplicity than anticipated (resulting in less plain line, S&C and significantly less servicing equipment), analysis of signal gantries in order to descope them entirely, removal of unnecessary train access platforms and options to reduce the overall maintenance shed size while also removing one of the equipment drops.

East London Line Phase 2Phase 2 of the East London Line Project is the last Phase of the London Overground Enhancement. It will complete the orbital network by linking Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction. Carillion won the two Network Rail contracts to install a double junction at Old Kent Road (WP2) and build an additional platform at Clapham Junction (WP3). Both these geographically isolated Work Packages each contain aspects of all rail disciplines. As the Design Manager I am responsible for managing seven different design consultants and ensuring that their designs fully integrate with each other for each of the two packages. Despite the modest value of these construction contracts, c.12m in total, the tight timescales, large amount of change and complexity of the integration make it a constant challenge. The project was further stretched when tasked with taking some additional work from GRIP 3 right through to construction completion within 6 months.Due to the size of the Project it did not warrant a Document Controller or a full time Engineering Manager and as such I performed the majority of these duties myself. This included the issuing, filing, and registering of all documents/drawings as well as managing all the design integration, assurance and compliance processes.

North London Railway Infrastructure Project (NLRIP)The North London Railway Infrastructure Project (NLRIP) was a complex, multidisciplinary project to increase capacity on the London Overground Network. Carillion's work included track layout enhancement, sewer replacement, station reconstruction, platform extensions, 200+ new signal bases, OLE replacement, transformer installation and M&E works. There were numerous interfaces to manage between different stakeholders including Network Rail, TFL, LOROL, Atkins, ODA, 8 District Councils etc. As principal contractor, Carillion's contract value was c.£120m and our subcontract with design consultants Hyder and Corus was worth c.£12m.As the assistant to the Design Manager, I was primarily responsible for ensuring that the design process, including approval and assurance, was carried out with maximum efficiency. I would monitor the status of all the 300+ design deliverables and work closely with Network Rail and the designers to resolve any blockers to progress (IDC/DRN comment issues, survey requirements, TQ's etc.) in order to maintain the design programme. Working closely with Network Rail's Engineering Team I was able to build a relationship of mutual benefit through which we could be open with each other and work together to resolve problems. I would also liaise with the construction teams in order to prioritise and value engineer the designs.After the completion of the design phase I became responsible for managing the production of redline and As-Built drawings. As a value exercise Carillion chose to produce as-built drawings in house and I managed a small team of CAD technicians to complete the 2000+ drawings ourselves at significantly reduced cost.
