Polarization engineering in thermal absorption is useful for enhancing thermal radiation at specific frequencies with a high degree of polarization up to 80 %. The strong absorption induced by greatly reduced group velocity for a certain polarization is the underlying physical reason for this phenomenon. We have recently demonstrated that the unidirectional heat absorption (and manipulation) is feasible from thermally activated near-blackbody radiation. We are currently expanding our research direction towards probing violation of Kirchhoff’s laws of absorption and emission for circularly polarized heat radiations.

A high-resolution sensitive optical imaging platform plays a crucial role for accurate intraoperative detection of tumor margins during breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) to minimize the current ~20% frequency of second surgery to resect residual tumor tissue. My overarching goal is to realize the significant clinical potential of nanoparticle-enabled optical imaging in oncology. However, existing nanoparticle-based imaging techniques are limited by their poor efficiency owing to the lack of efficient delivery systems and multiple scattering within a turbid medium-like tissue leads to loss of directionality that results in image blurring. Towards this goal, we have developed a quantitative polarized light imaging platform that exploits the unique and rich information content afforded by intrinsic tissue polarization properties and explore contrast enhancement via plasmonic gold nanoparticles as extrinsic contrast enhancers in the polarization Mueller matrix imaging. Towards this goal, I have demonstrated the useful polarization parameters diattenuation and retardance signature of plasmonic gold nanorods in an optically turbid medium. These research findings are published in Scientific Reports recently.
