Professor of Law at the University of Exeter. I have previously been Head of Law and Associate Dean for Education at Faculty level and Associate Academic Dean for Students, across the University. I have been awarded a University Fellowship Award for Excellence in Teaching. I am a Principal Fellow of the HEA. I am a recently appointed member of the Civil Justice Council. I sit on the new Law Society of England and Wales Steering Group for learning and development, specialising in legal design. I have also been awarded 2022 LawTech UK pioneer project support where I am engaged in developing student entrepreneurship. I am keenly committed to developing innovation in education, business and community-linked projects through a new project, GLEE Lab (Global Legal Education and Entrepreneurship Lab). I am on the editorial board of the journal Law Teacher and an assessor for OfS. My research interests also focus on access to justice in the civil courts, particularly at the role of court-based mediation. I have written about mediation in Canada and Florida & New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. I was a member of the Civil Justice Council Advisory Group on ODR led by Professor Richard Susskind, which recommended the online court, and a member of the JUSTICE group on Preventing Digital Exclusion which reported in 2018. I recently published a paper on online mediation in international Journal of Law in Context (2020). I have conducted peer reviews for the Ministry of Justice on mediation in small claims courts.I am passionate about pro bono and supporting public legal education and legal advice in the community. I led the set up of a student advice clinic, the Community Legal Helpdesk, which won the LawWorks Attorney-General Pro Bono Award 2013. I pioneered the Debt Literacy in Schools Project, commended for Best New Pro Bono Activity in 2010. I am a CEDR Accredited Mediator and a trained community mediator. She has been awarded a University Fellowship Award for Excellence in Teaching.Sue has published on the topic of mandatory mediation in Canada and has researched and published on mandatory projects in Florida and also New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. She is a member of the Civil Justice Council Advisory Group on ODR led by Professor Richard Susskind, set up to explore the role that Online Dispute Resolution can play in resolving civil disputes in the courts, the initial report was published in February 2015. She sits on the Editorial Board of the journal ‘Law Teacher’ and the Academic Committee of the Civil Mediation Council.Sue has a broad commitment to pro bono and out-reach activities.
