When I retired from a long and fruitful teaching career in the summer of 2023, I knew my professional career was still far from finished. I’ve always been passionate about aiding in others’ ability to improve. Whether it was a patient of mine coming out of the woods on a lonely hospital night — or seeing a child finally have the “aha!” moment where they understood a lesson or concept, I have found great purpose in watching those around me develop their untapped potential. While nursing and teaching were very different fields, both fulfilled the part of me that yearned for the human connection in my professional life. I knew that whatever I did next had to allow me to tap into the education, guidance, problem-solving, and teamwork skills I’d spent a lifetime cultivating. I quickly realized how harmoniously these development and teamwork skills translated to coaching. I got to thinking... Maybe I could be a coach. I’ve coached students. I’ve coached patients. I’ve led my team of teachers as grade leader. Like everyone, I also spent countless hours on the other end, as a mentee.
