About Sue Zhang

I have a PhD from the Biomedical Engineering Department at Boston University, co-advised by Drs. Hadi Nia and Mark Grinstaff. I investigated the dynamics of solid stress in tumors and how solid stress plays a role in the activation of tumorigenic pathways. I majored in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Rochester with a concentration in Cell and Tissue Engineering. There, I primarily worked on drug delivery methods. I have relevant learning experience from my Biomaterials course, in which I learned the fundamental ideas of biomaterials and drug delivery with polymers, particularly PEG hydrogels. I have lab experience with synthesizing hydrogels, as well as analyzing various properties of hydrogels, including protein diffusion and adsorption and mechanical strength testing. I was a research assistant in the Benoit Lab, in which I perform research on nanoparticle-mediated siRNA delivery using hydrogels. During Summer 2017, I was a research assistant under Hooman Sadri-Ardekani working on testis organoids for male fertility preservation which primarily targets prepubertal cancer patients. Additionally, I have experience in surgical media processing (related to keratoprosthesis) in Dr. James V. Aquavella clinic and exposure to non-invasive methods of altering collagen network formation through ultrasound. I'm addition to my interests in biomedical engineering, I am also passionate about teaching students from underserved backgrounds and making STEM education more accessible and equitable in rural areas.
