About Sujoy Chowdhury

I have a track record of leading, launching and landing both 'Zero to One' or v1 products and '1 to n' products. My product management experience spans from mobile or social products and services to enterprise products, platforms and ecosystems. The products I lead are informed by my diverse background in computer science, design (human computer interaction, human factors, user experience research), data analytics and a telecom startup. I bring in 15+ years of industry experience in developing innovative products and services. My cross-disciplinary skill-set can add value to any product team in building delightful products and experiences that meet real user needs. My product management career started in 2005 in the telecom industry. Back then, I was an Computer Science undergrad in Bangladesh. I teamed up with three other classmates and co-founded a startup called ‘3SM Systems’. Before graduation, I steered this start-up to successful product launches in two telcos and almost made the third. Our flagship products for Bangla SMS (two novel phone text input products for a local language) earned nation-wide recognition. We were touted as pioneers who bridged a substantial gap between the industry and academia in Bangladesh. After graduation, our startup disbanded. I joined the fourth telco to design a wide range of telco products, and create more impact over millions of customers. I moved to the USA in 2009 for graduate studies. Since then, I have been leading successful products & services at NetApp, Motorola Research, Microsoft, Teradata and at Oracle (since 2020). In between, as a lifelong learner, I completed my second episode of graduate education at the MIT Media Lab.

Previously, as a Product Manager in the Data Analytics, Platform & Update Publishing Services teams, I contributed in Microsoft’s pivot to Windows as A Service model, or from being a boxed software to a software as a service model. I orchestrated Microsoft's journey in building the next-generation of cross-platform update system in the cloud, so that Windows as a Service customers can get current and stay current. This system was rearchitected from Windows Phone Publishing for scale and cloud (Azure) migration. I also led data driven efforts on how Microsoft listens to customers. For example: enterprise customer feedback text was analyzed using Natural Language Processing techniques (like sentiment analysis) for early detection of regression signals. I ran the KB Watch program that combined signals from different social and device telemetry sources for Windows Leadership and SWAT teams. Before that, I established an end-to-monitoring for Update Publishing Pipeline by instituting an Incident Management System in WSD. My responsibilities included detailed specification writing and driving software engineering life-cycle from there. I collaborated across organizational boundaries and balanced competing priorities to achieve the goals of Windows Servicing and Delivery organization.

  • Motorola
User Experience Research Intern, Ux Research & Design Lab, Applied Research & Technology Center
    Motorola Jun 2010 - Sep 2010
    Chicago, Illinois, Us
As an intern, I built a social product from scratch. I developed the Android story client, web-based story creation interface and story server components of a proof-of-concept prototype titled 'Serendipitous Family Stories' at Motorola's Experience Research Lab at Schaumburg, IL (Motorola HQ). This system was created based on results from a study on intergenerational communication over a distance conducted by Motorola Applied Research Center. In a pilot usability study, the intuitiveness of the functional prototype was supported when 2 users were able to create 10 stories in 30 minutes. Technologies used: Android, Adobe Flash Media Server, Google Maps API, PHP, XML, video transcoding. The following publications describe the system:[1] Promoting Intergenerational Communication Through Location-Based Asynchronous Video Communication. Frank Bentley, Santosh Basapur and Sujoy Kumar Chowdhury. Ubicomp 2011, Beijing, China. September 2011.[2] Reminiscing Through Location-based Asynchronous Video Communication. Frank Bentley, Santosh Basapur, and Sujoy Kumar Chowdhury. CHI 2011 Workshop on Bridging Practices, Theories, and Technologies to Support Reminiscence. May, 2011. [3] Serendipitous Family Stories: Using findings from a study on family communication to share family history. Frank Bentley and Sujoy Kumar Chowdhury. (Presented as a demo at Ubicomp 2010).Besides this, I was also a member of a multi-disciplinary team of interns that became runner-up in the 'Motorola Intern Apprentice Competition 2010'. We collaborated from different geographic locations to come up with a concept titled "There is no 'I' in Motorola".
